Primera publicación antológica de éste género musical en nuestro país con obras de 12 compositores costarricenses: Mauricio Fonseca, Mauricio Pauly, Federico Reuben, Fabricio Montero, Otto Castro, Roberto Fournier, Fabricio Durán, Pablo Chin, José Duarte, Federico Doërries y el grupo Autoperro.

WORKSHOP 0: “Music of Wheel”

El taller de caracter teórico-práctico que el cuarteto “0″ ofrecerá en Arteleku esta basado en la obra “Music of Wheel” compuesta por el miembro de la formación Joël Merah e interpretada en el disco de mismo título (“Music of Wheel”, Creative Sources, 2007) por esta ensemble. Los participantes del taller podrán conocer las ideas (leer notas) que residen en esta composición, así como interpretar la obra colectivamente junto a los miembros de “0″. Cada participante deberá de traer su propio instrumento (analógico, eléctrico o electrónico) para participar en las sesiones prácticas y actuará en el concierto final del taller. Dirigido a músicos, compositores y artistas sonoros con ganas de probar y conocer nuevas formas musicales y nuevas estrategias para trabajar en grupo.

El cuarteto “0″ (cero, hasta hace poco “0 ensemble”) es una de las formaciones más interesantes del panorama internacional de música experimental. Un proyecto que desde 2004 camina a caballo entre Bayona y Bruselas, con un pie puesto en la composición y otro en la improvisación ofreciendo como resultado una propuesta musical sugerente y atractiva por su delicadeza y sutileza. Prueba de ello son las interpretaciones que este cuarteto ha realizado de obras de compositores como John Cage, Morton Feldman, Taku Sugimoto o Erik Satie, así como las grabaciones publicadas hasta la fecha. Los miembros de “0” han trabajado o actuado en infinidad de proyectos como la Ensemble Intercontemporain (dirigida por Pierre Boulez) o la Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, y con artistas como Christian Fennesz, Bernhard Gunter, Phil Durrant, Nomos, Mauricio Kagel, Nikos Veliotis, Pascal Comelade o Georges Aperghis. Han publicado trabajos en sellos como FatCat, Ant-Zen, Type, Creative Sources, Amanita, DSA, Ameson, y han actuado en Europa, America y Asia.

Inscripción
Las solicitudes al taller se realizarán mediante el envío a Arteleku, antes de las 14:00 horas del 12 de septiembre de 2008 de la hoja de inscripción, currículum y una carta explicativa de las razones por las que se desea participar. La selección de admisión se llevará a cabo por los organizadores del taller y se comunicará personalmente a los interesados el mismo día 12 de septiembre.

Este taller es parte de la programación del noveno festival de otras músicas ERTZ.

The National Coordination for Music and Opera of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Mexican Center for Music and Sonic Arts invite electroacoustic music composers to participate in the third Electroacoustic Composition Prize Visiones Sonoras.

All composers or sonic artists from any nationality with no age restriction can participate by presenting an electro acoustic piece in the following terms.

Participation guidelines
1. Each participant can submit only one work;
2. The work submitted shall have a duration between 3 and 12 minutes;
3. Submitted works must have been composed after January 1st, 2006 and must not have been previously edited on a commercial CD;
4. Only stereo works in .wav, .sdII, .aiff, or MP3 formats will be accepted. No Works by post mail will be accepted. The works and documents must be sent electronically to the email mentioned below;
5. Works that are meant to be performed in more than two audio channels must submit a stereo version of the work;
6. No mixed or live electronic works are accepted;
7. All participants in the Composers Meeting that will take place within the Festival Visiones Sonoras 2008, as well as those not participating in such event are eligible to submit work;
8. Special guests of the Festival or other individuals participating in the organization and/or production of the Festival are not eligible to participate in this Prize;
9. Composers who have been commissioned work by the Visiones Sonoras 2008 Festival are not eligible to participate in this Prize;
10. Works that won in latest editions of this Invitation are not eligible;
11. Participating in this invitation implies the total acceptance of all guidelines by the participant, as well as the authorization for the Festival to use materials for promotional purposes.

Selection process
12 . The Jury will be comprised of recognized composers in the field of electroacoustic music;
13 . The evaluation of the works will take into consideration the quality in the presentation of materials, as well as the thorough fulfillment of the Participation Guidelines outlined above;
14 . The Jury’s decision cannot be appealed;
15 . All cases not foreseen in this invitation shall be resolved by the Jury.

Awards
16 . The winning work will be awarded the Visiones Sonoras Electroacoustic Composition Prize 2008 which consists in $15,000.00 (fifteen thousand pesos);
17 . The winner will also receive a participation grant for the Festival Visiones Sonoras 2008, entitling him or her to attend all the activities of the Festival. If the winner does not resides in Morelia, Michoacán, the Festival will cover the expenses pertaining to two meals per day and hotel accommodation, double room;
18. Additionally, $7,500.00 (seven thousand five hundred pesos), will be given as prize to the best work made by a Mexican composer. If the winner does not reside in Morelia, Michoacán, the Festival will cover two meals per day and hotel accommodation, double room;
19 . The Jury can bestow the Honorable Mentions that it considers to be pertinent. This award will consist of a participation grant for the Visiones Sonoras 2008 Festival, that will entitle them to attend all the activities of the Festival. If the winner does not resides in Morelia, Michoacán, the Festival will cover the expenses pertaining to two meals per day and hotel accommodation, double room;
20 . All winning works and those obtaining a special mention will be considered for future performances in Visiones Sonoras Festival.

• All materials submitted by e-mail shall be sent within a single message. Only ZIP, .sit or .sitx formats will be accepted if compression is required

Este martes 3 comienza una vez más el ciclo de música electroacústica de septiembre, organizado por el Laboratorio ARCIS de Informática Musical (www.laim.cl). Como siempre, las composiciones se escucharán a través de un sistema de difusión multi-parlante, el que se operará en vivo durante los conciertos. Este sistema permite la espacialización o efecto fonocinético del sonido a través de 8 parlantes de amplio espectro que rodearán a la audiencia. De esta manera, el público podrá percibir claramente el movimiento espacial de las ondas sonoras a través de la sala.

concierto 1 / miércoles 3 de septiembre: Concierto obras “Proyecto North South”.

El proyecto “North-South” nace de la iniciativa de un grupo de creadores de música electroacústica del norte de Europa y del sur de América. La idea fue trabajar obras electroacústicas (acusmáticas) en base a un banco de sonidos común, formado colectivamente por los miembros del proyecto, y que representara los entornos sonoros de los lugares de orígen de los compositores. Las obras que se mostrarán en este concierto, serán editadas próximamente en CD a través de Elektron Records (Suecia). Los compositores participantes son Cecilia García-Gracia (Chile), José Miguel Candela (Chile) (ambos profesores de la Escuela de Música de Universidad ARCIS - ex SCD), Jens Hedman (Suecia), Hanna Hartman (Suecia), Petri Kuljuntausta (Finlandia), Patrick Kosk (Finlandia), Anders Vinjar (Noruega), Heðin Ziska Davidsen (Dinamarca), Rikhardur H. Para la Red de Arte Sonoro LAtinoamericano, el arte sonoro integra a todas las actividades artísticas que trabajan con el sonido como medio de expresión. concierto 3 / martes 10 de septiembre: Concierto - Lanzamiento del cd “TTK, 81 micropiezas para saxofón y electroacústica”

“La gran música suena suavemente, la gran imagen carece de contornos” (epigrama 41, Tao Te King).

Después de un proceso de más de 5 años, finalmente este 10 de septiembre verá la luz el cd “TTK - 81 micropiezas para saxofón y electroacústica” ,obra inspirada en el libro Tao Te King de Lao Tse y que constituye el primer disco íntegramente dedicado al saxofón y eléctroacústica en la historia de la electroacústica chilena. En el evento Miguel Villafruela (saxofones) y José Miguel Candela realizarán un concierto con una selección de las 81 micropiezas. El disco formará parte del catálogo del netlabel chileno Pueblo Nuevo donde se puede encontrar información detallada y fotografías.

Concierto de música electroacústica chilena, de compositores miembros de la Comunidad Electroacústica de Chile. En la ocasión se mostrará la obra coreográfica resultante del “Taller de Música Electroacústica para Danza” que impartiera José Miguel Candela en enero de este año, en el marco de la escuela de verano que promovió la Escuela de Música de Universidad ARCIS - ex SCD. Rubén García [España]
Es biólogo, artista sonoro y curador independiente con base en la ciudad de Valencia. Desde mitad de los ‘90 ha explorado distintas aproximaciones a la creación sonora; sus técnicas oscilan desde la manipulación de giradiscos y grabadores de cinta rotos o modificados a, sobre todo, la captura de fenómenos acústicos a través de grabaciones ambientales y en la amplificación de eventos y fenómenos sonoros que usualmente pasan inadvertidos o son inaccesibles a nuestro sentido de la percepción. Su interés en las grabaciones ambientales se centra, principalmente, en el poder del sonido por sí mismo y su potencial como material en bruto para la creación artística así como los aspectos científicos y estéticos inherentes en la resonancia, el tiempo, el silencio y el acto de la escucha. Es director artístico del sello EOZOÖN editions de Valencia y, en la misma ciudad, es curador de arte sonoro en el festival Observatori. Además coordina del ciclo de conciertos ((VIBRA)) en el OCCC de Valencia. Tiene editados diversos trabajos en sellos especializados de Europa, Latinoamérica y Australia; así como diversas piezas para danza contemporánea. Ha realizado además talleres e instalaciones sonoras.

OPEN INVITATION to participate on ISIM: International Society of Improvised Music

On  this note, (this is serious!)  I am inviting you to consider joining and contributing your energy in a slightly different mode, the I.S.I.M.  That’s International Society of Improvised Music. Founded in 2000 by Ed Sarath, in Ann Arbor, the organization is gaining ground for the advocacy of improvised music, facilitating events, and exploring the potential for the philosophy and practice of improvisation to make a difference in the music world,  in society, and to knit together a network of kindred spirits throughout the world.
It kind of reminds me of what we envisioned to do in 1980, in NYC with the Improvisor’s Network (I.N.), but I.S.I.M is developing on a grander scale, and with more sure footing.  With an impressive Advisory Board already in place, I.S.I.M has already launched far-reaching directives.  Society is more ready, and the
environment right for improvisation to emerge as a recognized multi-dimensional art form.  It is the right time for a world musical evolution that will bring  together diverse disciplines that cross theoretical, transpersonal, aesthetic, and cultural lines.

Though quite young, I.S.I.M. already has a strong presence and two successful conferences where members meet and present, a website, publications and CD releases.  Just recently,  I was invited to join the Board of Directors, to help further the growth and cause of I.S.I.M.
My goal is to encourage  the “grass-roots” element of our improvising community, beyond academia, to join, to become involved, and be an integral part of building the organization, for those who have been
practicing the art of improvisation in their work to be a significant sector,  along with the philosophers and academia, to pull together a unified greater community, to influence, participate and contribute to
the movement and the practice.

Currently, we are entering a growth strategy. We need and want to increase I.S.I.M. memberships.  So, I am inviting you personally, to join the International Society of Improvised Music as a member.  There
are several levels of membership. I’m sure you will be able to find the level fits your interest.  You will be able to create your own web-page profile on the I.S.I.M. site, contribute music & articles, propose ideas, and participate in I.S.I.M conferences and festivals, interact and network, and further your own outreach, support your local activity with I.S.I.M as a parent organization. Indeed, our goal is to have active individuals and communities, building an education & performance network in the U.S. and internationally.  We all need to
know each other and feast on the exchange of music and ideas.  So, I’m asking you to take the time to go to our website, and check out the rest of us, who believe that your presence and alliance together with
like-minded individuals, will make a real difference for the future of

improvisers, and our relationship to the arts, and for the things we can birth together, for mutual creativity and community.

The Third Annual Conference, will be held this year at the University of Denver, on December 5-7, 2008.  The proposal deadline for performances and presentations is September 1st.  As a member, you will be eligible to submit a proposal to participate.

I’d like to see you join me in creating the “grass roots” sector of I.S.I.M, to make our voice an essential limb of the organization! a subversive arm, if you will, a balance to the academia! Examining improvisation, its philosophy, community, manifestation, and potential. So, please, consider joining.

When Charlie Parker stated that “if you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn,” he conveyed, in his inimitable way, the capacity of improvisation to serve as a vehicle for integrating the totality of influences that shape personal and social identity.  From class, culture, economics, and ecology to gender, race, sexuality, and spirituality; improvising musicians spontaneously meld these and other aspects of their being in expressions that serve as both profound personal and collective commentaries.  In an era in which unprecedented levels of superficiality, alienation, and violence often overshadow a growing interest in creative and transpersonal development, and where an ever-escalating morass of data threatens to engulf a genuine cross-fertilization between disciplines and cultures; the importance of a creative vehicle for accessing and expressing one’s inner and outer worlds has never been greater.

Improvisation not only excels in this regard, it also—through the very moment-to-moment decision-making sequences that require individuals to penetrate beyond ordinary patterns of behavior—may exemplify the dissolution of provincial and nationalistic tendencies that divide communities and countries in our politically fragile world.
Improvisation, in fact, may be the ultimate lens through which the quest for self and community is revealed to be as much a collective as a personal endeavor.

The International Society for Improvised Music invites proposals related to the above theme for performances, papers, workshops, and other presentations for its third annual conference.  The theme may be construed broadly: it is compatible across wide-ranging approaches to improvised performance, it invites wide-ranging pedagogical applications, and suggests connections to wide-ranging, cross-disciplinary areas.  ISIM is committed to diversity in its programming.
